Science comes naturally to toddlers because they indulge in different activities and explore things themselves. Sometimes they get into trouble, but that’s how they learn. You may have seen your little one dropping objects and trying to figure out what a toy does. They are constantly exploring and learning. The little scientist in them doesn’t stop investigating and experimenting. And that’s why we believe introducing science to your toddler won’t be difficult.

When we think of science, the first thing that comes to mind is chemicals. However, science is not just about chemistry – you can introduce other scientific concepts that are safer and easier to grasp.
A toddler’s brain is still developing, so look for something age-appropriate. Chemicals are harmful, so let’s leave it to the laboratory teacher. When your child grows up, they will learn about chemicals too. Let’s start slow!
You need to give your toddler something intriguing to solve. For example, keep a toy truck and tie a rope around it. Let your toddler figure out that they need to pull it. That’s science too! You can also start with a puzzle.
It motivates the toddler to think and figure out the puzzle. Help them if required, but ideally, you should let the toddler lead.
Bath time need not be boring. For example, let’s say you’ve made a bubble bath for your kid. Introduce some toys that float and others that sink. You can tell your baby that certain toys sink and others float. You can introduce different materials, sizes, shapes, and weights. This is a fundamental concept but a vital lesson for a young mind.
Once you have explained the concept, ask your child why certain toys sink, and others float. You want your child to understand the difference between two materials, heavy weights and lightweight objects.
We used the word ‘woods,’ but you could be anywhere outdoors and explore the wilderness and even the city. Once you are outside, there is so much to teach a young mind.
When birds chirp or sing a song, encourage your kid to listen to them. If you find different kinds of animals like birds, dogs, and cats outside, tell your kid about the difference between the three. You could even differentiate between them using the sounds that they make.
Show different kinds of flowers and plants to your kid. For example, you can tell them the difference between flowering plants and ones that bear fruit.
There is botany, biology, and physics outside! You could also show your toddler the cars and motorcycles outside. How do they function? What is required for a car to move? What is speed? These are basic concepts you could teach your little one.
If you find butterflies or bees outside, you can tell your kid how a butterfly is born. It’s an exciting process. You can also tell them what bees do for the environment and people.
Your toddler also needs to know where the vegetables and fruits come from. When you teach these concepts, a toddler listens. Even if they don’t understand everything, you must introduce your young one to the environment, scientific concepts, and good and bad things. Who else will teach these things? Schooling comes at a later stage. A young person’s first teacher is YOU.

You can bring three objects – a rock, some leaves, shells, and a soft toy. Let your toddler feel all the objects and tell the difference.

You should invest in scientific tools like binoculars, telescopes, abacus, magnifying glasses, weighing scales, etc.
Let your child know the uses of each object. Having scientific tools at home can build curiosity. Sure, your kids will discover what they are as they grow up. But why don’t you start early?
